I've tried various litter solutions and can confidently say that the CatGenie is *the* best option for Cleo and me. Yes, if you pencil out the math and landfill over a few years, the genie certainly wins. But beyond those two rational reasons, the fact that there's no litter smell - clay, corn, wheat, silica - is pretty much the most glorious thing about this appliance. And you can do an overnight away, provided your food plan allows, without being concerned about where you'll find little gifts when you return.
We use the longer wait time for Cat Mode (which I discovered accidentally when looking to see if the 10 minute delay was customizable) with the 24 hour cycle. It isn't loud enough to wake me (down the hall), and when I hear it from another room, it's similar to a kitchen fan in terms of volume. I have it set up by the laundry, using the same drain as the washing machine.
I got the Tux package because the higher side rails seemed like they'd contain litter better. For previous cats and their habits, the regular would have been fine, but Cleo is kind of a digger and pile-maker. Because of her industriousness, I put on the hood and it's made a world of difference.
Poo: Occasionally, Cleo's deposits are a little more pebbly/broken up and 1 or 2 will flop off the side of the rake hand. This results in washed poos, and warm-air-dried poos... Warm poo smell is pretty unpleasant. If I'm around, I'll pop my head in and see if there are any unraked lumps that need to be manually scooped prior to the dry cycle, or I come home and notice a lingering scent, and then I scoop it out separately. This happens, maybe, 3 times a month and is largely dependent on her hydration level or if she's spend the whole day hiding (and holding it). I haven't had a problem with anything in the laundry area becoming poo-scent infused.
Tracking litter: This is not unique to this product. You probably have a trail of other litter and may or may not notice if it's slipped into the carpet. These little pieces don't get lost in carpet. They're small and remind me of those little tube-like beads. Shorter than sprinkles and a little thicker. I've purchased a "black hole" littler mat that supplements the one that you can buy for the CatGenie. Again, not unique to this, just a slightly different experience.
